Position Overview

The Head Coach is responsible to instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while using a demonstrated understanding of the educational and social mission and values of the school.


Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrate a commitment to Catholic values and the promotion of the associated culture within a Catholic school
  • Abide by the rules of the school, the sport, and the OSSAA, while demonstrating the teaching values, and the ethical and moral behavior in line with the mission of the school.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff, ensuring that all these fit within the educational and social mission of the school.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and at season’s end, analyze and evaluate staff members and their effectiveness according to school and sport policy.
  • Manages and maintains individual sport schedule, including all communication with administration, staff, faculty and students.
  • Accurately assesses players’ skills and potential contributions to the sport.
  • Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices, including planning and scheduling information, and adheres to scheduled facility time. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Follow the direction of the Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator in respect to injury, training, and injury prevention.
  • Recommend policy, method or procedural changes at the request of the Athletic Director.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, students, and other stakeholders regarding all processes, procedures, rules, and policies of the school and individual program.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with all school stakeholders, especially Athletic Department staff and fellow coaches.
  • Stay involved with individual sports associations and attends important meetings dealing with school-related athletics, including all school coaches’ meetings and in-service opportunities.
  • Develop good team spirit and morale, instilling a positive and energetic culture in the program.
  • Adhere to budget policies and procedures. Is responsible for operating within budgeted appropriations.
  • Responsible for all equipment, inventory, and communication of program needs to maintain a safe and successful program.
  • Promote sports within the school and promote the sport outside the school through news media or in any other legal manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
