Jim Franz Named Bishop Kelley’s New Principal

Jim Franz, who has been principal for the past 19 years at Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic High School in Tyler, TX has been named the new principal of Bishop Kelley High School.  A graduate of Union High School in Tulsa, OK, Franz was chosen from a number of candidates to lead and support Bishop Kelley’s faculty, staff, and students.

BK President Rev. Brian O’Brien introduced Franz as the school’s new principal at a press conference held April 20th in the school’s library.  “I’m excited that we were able to attract an administrator of Jim’s caliber,” said O’Brien.  “While BK academics are already strong, Jim will assist our faculty in helping our students to experience even greater spiritual growth and academic success.  We must never rest on our laurels and Jim will challenge us to improve.”

“It is an honor to be asked by Father O'Brien to serve the Bishop Kelley community.  The school has a very established tradition of excellence in Catholic education in Tulsa,” said Franz.  “Bishop Kelley faculty and staff are impressive in their level of dedication and service to students and I’m looking forward to working with both BK faculty and students.”

“I cannot wait to see what he has in store for Bishop Kelley,” said Student Body President Tushar Patel. He welcomed our new principal during the press conference on behalf of all current and future Bishop Kelley students. “I’m confident that Mr. Franz will inspire all the students he encounters to achieve excellence.”

Under Franz’s leadership, Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic High School was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.  As principal there, he has taught an AP English class for 19 consecutive years. Prior to his tenure at Bishop Gorman, Franz served at Holy Cross High School in San Antonio as Vice-Principal/Director of Studies.  He got his start in teaching English at Marist Brothers’ High School in Pago Pago, Samoa.

At Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic High School, Franz oversaw facilities, development, accreditation, and community involvement.  He also coached boys Cross Country with his 2001 team winning the state 3-A title in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS).  Franz has also served on the Leadership Council for the TAPPS League.

“For decades Bishop Kelley High School has been forming the minds, hearts, and souls of its students.  Now we welcome Jim Franz as our new principal,” said The Most Reverend David Konderla, Bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa.  “May God bless him as he ministers among us.”
