Comets Will Start 2018-2019 Season on New Turf

The 2018-2019 Comet student-athletes will be playing on a brand-new turf this fall.

“We hope this new turf serves students for the next decade,” said Athletic Director Lance Parks, “maybe even longer.”

The old turf was set in the fall of 2007, thanks to the help of generous donors, and has served our students well. “Our Facilities Management crew has done a tremendous job of maintaining our field,” said Parks. “However, multiple tests were done two years ago that proved it was on the path to replacement. The fibers were very worn down and it would soon become an unsafe playing environment for our students.”

Although the field will primarily be used by football and soccer teams, every student-athlete will benefit from the upgrade. Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Beau Beathard, who works with all of our OSSAA sanctioned athletic programs, frequently trains all student-athletes on the field.

“We have been able to spend the past several workouts on the new turf,” said head football coach JJ Tappana. “We can already tell there is less wear and tear on our knees, ankles and feet. It decreases fatigue on our players and coaches and will improve overall safety as we get into our season.”

The removal of the old turf began in late May and the project was completed in late June.
