Academic Bowl Takes State for Sixth Year in a Row

The Bishop Kelley Academic Bowl team has taken home the state trophy for the sixth year in a row. The team took eight people in total to state, two more than usual. “All the team members put in such hard work and showed such dedication,” said teacher/coach Medea Bendel, “that I decided to take more people.” Bendel has been coaching the BK Academic Bowl team since 1999.

“We were fairly confident going in,” sophomore and team captain Aidan Raine said, “but the competition was really tough. The first time we played Altus we won by the skin of our teeth.” BK also played Glenpool and Edison, and then went up against Altus again in the finals. The final score was 250-230. In addition to Raine, the team has another captain, senior Eddie Liechti. This was the last state championship for him and other seniors, Caroline Godfrey, Bob Siegfried, and Sam Nightingale.

State took place in El Reno, Oklahoma, and a total of eight teams were there. “It was hard without last year’s seniors,” said Raine, “but everyone worked really hard to get there and we’re excited for nationals.” Nationals will take place in New Orleans, during late May.
