Book Club

Bishop Kelley Book Club is for all students, faculty, and staff members who love talking about a good book. It will meet once a quarter in the library before school.  A book will be selected to read each quarter.  A fun and lively discussion of the book will take place at each meeting. Each reader's experience of the book varies, so all opinions are encouraged and respected.  This is a time when teachers and students can mingle informally outside the classroom to share ideas about popular books. Everyone in the Bishop Kelley learning community is encouraged to join! Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be given away.  Come by the library today and sign-up with Mrs. Parrish.

The landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education,

brought the promise of integration to Little Rock, AR, but it was hard-won for the nine black teenagers

chosen to integrate Central High School in 1957.  These students, known as "The Little Rock Nine",

endured more physical and emotional abuse from racist segregationists than the general public may realize.

One of the survivors tells her story of the unimaginable events that occurred inside the walls

of Central High, while teachers, administrators, and the national guard escorts assigned

to them looked the other way.  From daily death threats, to fireball and acid-throwing attacks,

Melba Pattillo Beals and her eight classmates were transformed into reluctant warriors -

on a battlefield that helped shape the civil rights movement.
